Unintended consequences

This article essentially asks the question “how much technology is too much?” No, it’s not another article claiming that the Kindle will bring about the downfall of civilization. At issue is the purpose of belonging to a gym.

As gyms have introduced personal tv screens and ipod docks in every machine, they have started to see sharp attrition rates. Research has shown that the key to long term success in adhering to a fitness regimen (and maintaining gym memberships, on the business side) is socialization.

The technology that people say they want when interviewed in focus groups may actually be killing the sense of community that they really seek.
