Cult following

From the website Business Insider comes a short article entitled “16 Brands That Have Fanatical Cult Followings.”  Some are ones you might expect, like Zappos and Harley-Davidson.  Then there are some you might not expect – like Mazda Miata and Yuengling Lager.

Yuengling is an interesting case – in State College, PA, anyway, Yuengling is everywhere.  Go to a bar and say “Give me a lager,” and you’ll get Yuengling.  It’s not a particularly special thing. But as this article points out, the brand tends to be more “cultish” in places where it is not widely available.

Marketers often are looking to build stronger, more differentiated brands.   Definitely some food for thought in these examples.
