Hold the phone

This isn’t directly about marketing – it is more about product design.  It is the obituary of a Bell Labs researcher named John Karlin, who used the principles of industrial psychology and behavioral science to design the rectangular layout of the telephone keypad.

His research also contributed to establish the proper length of telephone cords and also the look of old-time rotary phones.
